What certification will I receive after completing the program?
Students who complete the Medical Office Professional program receive a certificate of completion, which can help increase employability in entry-level medical office positions. While this program does not include an Electronic Health/Medical Record certification, students are introduced to electronic health record systems commonly used in medical offices.
What will I learn in this program?
This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in medical offices and other health-related settings, as well as support individuals already working in healthcare who want to update their skills or pursue advancement opportunities.
Students will learn to:

Develop the knowledge and skills needed to perform entry-level duties such as medical receptionist, administrative medical assistant, and patient service representative.

Understand front office operations, including patient intake, scheduling, medical records management, and patient check-out procedures.

Learn basic medical terminology and business English used in healthcare settings.

Become familiar with governmental regulations, legal considerations, and professional codes of ethics within the healthcare industry.

Gain an overview of the healthcare system, including managed care organizations and how they differ.

Learn the basics of common insurance programs such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Medicare, Medi-Cal, TRICARE, CHAMPVA, and Workers’ Compensation.

Practice electronic applications used for patient registration, appointment scheduling, HIPAA compliance, and payment documentation.

Build basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and keyboarding.

Recognize the benefits of professional certification (such as Administrative Medical Assistant certification), even though certification is not required for employment.

Demonstrate respect for diversity and understand the value of inclusive, professional workplace interactions.

Develop an interest in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.

What are the requirements to take this course?

- Attend a Medical Orientation
- Attend First Class day for the Medical Office Professional program

Schedule
When is the program offered?
This is a 1-semester course (5 months) that is offered twice a year, starting in August and January. The class is Monday -Thursday, 6:00 pm - 8:45 pm. All students will also be eligible to complete a 100-hour internship in a medical office at the completion of their coursework.

Cost
How much does the program cost?
Starting in the 26-27 school year, HOC is moving to a more inclusive fee structure to cover most additional costs required for the class. As a result, the program registration fee has increased and the additional costs have decreased. The program registration fee is $345 and includes AHA BLS certification and ebooks.
Are there any additional costs associated with the program?
The only addiitional cost is for scrubs. A set of scrubs can range from $25 - $150 depending on brand and style.
Is financial aid or tuition assistance available?
As a K-12 adult school, we are unable to offer financial aid. We do partner with the San Diego Workforce Partnership, local career centers, and other organizations whenever possible to offer opportunities for fees to be reduced or covered for qualified participants. What is the refund policy?
Students have until the last day of the second week of class to request a refund for the registration fee minus a $25 processing fee. Textbook fee only refundable if textbook is returned un-opened/un-used.

Beverly Downing
Beverly Downing has been an instructor at HOC since 1994. She holds a Designated Subjects Teaching Credential to teach Career Technical Education courses in California. Beverly worked as a unit clerk for 13 years, an administrative secretary in an orthopedics office for 10 years, and as a Quality Data Analyst for 16 years.

Where is training for the program completed?
The Medical Office Professional course is a hybrid course with part of the curriculum offered online and the other on our Health Occupations Center campus located in Santee, CA.
Students that successfully complete the course are eligible to participate in a 100-hour internship at a local medical office.
