Learning Outcomes

What certification will I receive after completing the program?
 
The EMT program is accredited by the San Diego County Emergency Medical Services. Upon successful completion of the course and examination, students qualify to take the National Registry exam and skills test to be nationally certified as an EMT-Basic.  
 
 
 
What will I learn in this program?
 
This course is designed to provide entry-level training in emergency room and ambulance techniques in preparation for the county certification examination. Students learn to render proper treatment in the handling of patients to prevent further injury and to sustain the lives of critically injured and ill patients. This course includes 204 hours of classroom instruction, 24 hours required ambulance ride along and 8 hours of Emergency Room (ER) Observation. 

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Perform a primary and secondary survey to identify injuries or illnesses to the standard of an Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Treat patients at the scene and during transport to a facility according to currently accepted San Diego protocols and Scope of Practice.
  • Demonstrate interest for ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Demonstrate an adaptable and flexible approach toward change and the diverse population.
  • Communicate respectfully and demonstrate acceptance of diversity.
  • Seek resources and opportunities for lifelong learning.
 

Requirements

What are the requirements to take this course?
  • Be at least 18 or older
  • Attend a Medical Orientation
  • Attend First Class day for the EMT program
  • Proof of required immunizations (list will be provided at registration)
  • Have a valid CA Driver's License

Schedule

When is the program offered?
 
This is a 4-5 month course that is offered twice a year starting in August and January.  The course will be Mon/Tues, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.  All students will also be required to complete 24 hours of ambulance ride along and 8-12 hours of Emergency Room (ER) Observation.

Cost

How much does the program cost?
 
 The program registration fee is $525 and is due in full at the time of registration. The registration fee includes the course supply fee, EMT supply kit, and textbooks.  
 
Are there any additional costs associated with the program?
 
All students will need to complete an American Heart Association (AHA) approved Basic Life Support course.  We offer the course at the beginning of each semester for $55.  Additional fees that need to be considered average approximately $450 and may include:
  • EMT Uniform
  • Fingerprinting
  • Skills testing fee
  • National Registry Examination fee
Is financial aid or tuition assistance available?
 
As a K-12 adult school we are unable to offer financial aid. We do partner with the San Diego Workforce Partnership, local career centers, and other organizations whenever possible to offer opportunities for fees to be reduced or covered for qualified participants. For more information on what is available for this program, attend an orientation and/or connect with a transition services specialist.
 
What is the refund policy?
 
Students have until the last day of the second week of class to request a refund for the registration fee minus a $25 processing fee.

Instructor

Brian Manns, EMT and retired Heartland Fire & Rescue Division Chief
Brian Manns has been an instructor for the HOC EMT program starting in Spring 2021.  He holds a Designated Subjects Teaching Credential to teach Career Technical Education courses in California.  Brian recently retired from Heartland Fire & Rescue and is excited to share his knowledge with prospective EMTs.
 

Facilities

Where is training for the program completed?
 
Skills lab work for the EMT program is performed in our new state of the art EMT lab, completed in January 2020, located at the Health Occupations Center in Santee.  The lab contains a simulated ambulance rig that was purchased with generous funding from the Grossmont Healthcare District.  The lab is fully stocked with all of the necessary equipment and supplies to move directly into the field following the completion of the EMT program.
 
Students that successfully complete the on campus instruction are eligible to participate in the 24-hour ambulance ride along and 8 hours placement in an Emergency Room setting.
