Step One:  Medical Terminology

Course Description:

Learn to communicate effectively in the workplace as you prepare for a career in healthcare. Understanding   the meaning of interchangeable words and medical terms used in different contexts in medical services and procedures makes the language of medicine easy to master for use in the office for medical transcription, billing, and coding. Class provides instruction in basic medical terminology with an emphasis on body systems.  

 

Prerequisite:  A passing score on the HOC Math/English Assessment test.  No HS Diploma or equivalency required for this class.

Step Two:  Administrative Medical Assistant 

Course Description:  

The Administrative Medical Assistant sets the tone in any healthcare facility.  Learn the skills needed to keep a medical office running smoothly.  This class covers front office procedures, communication, medical insurance, and CPT coding overview for insurance processing.  

 

Prerequisites:   A passing score on the HOC Math/English Assessment test.   Complete Medical Terminology, step 1 of the Medical Office Pathway.  No HS Diploma or equivalency required for this class.

Course Description:

This course provides entry-level skills. Instruction will cover the following areas: basic diagnostic coding (ICD-10-CM), procedural (CPT) coding, and HCPCS level II coding.  Jobs in the field include medical insurance biller, medical insurance clerk, front office medical assistant, accountant or information clerk.

 

Prerequisites:   A passing score on the HOC Math/English Assessment test and successful completion of Medical Terminology and Administrative Medical Assistant.  No HS Diploma or equivalency required for this class.

Elective Information

 

Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology

Course Description:

This basic class offers an introduction to the structures and functions of the human body.  Course content is   presented via classroom instruction, lab exploration, and web-based A&P curriculum.  This class is for students interested in learning more about anatomy and physiology to better succeed in the healthcare industry.  

(This class does not meet the VN program A&P prerequisite.)

Electronic Medical Records

 

Course Description:  

The medical field has progressed to the world of digital record keeping; it is important to keep up to date to   better serve your patients. Learn the technology associated with electronic patient records! In this class, you will navigate training software to learn how to create electronic patient history, electronic scheduling and appointments, enter vital signs, enter doctor's notes, track immunizations, reminders, and much more. The information learned in this class will help you in your allied health class (Pharmacy Tech, Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant, etc.) or in your nursing program.
